Introduction: Bringing a Vision to Life

For years, the founder envisioned making cold water therapy accessible to the general public through a smart ice bath solution. However, lacking prior experience in building a tech company made transforming this vision into reality seem daunting. As the Chief Science and Technology Officer, I was brought on board to bridge the gap between the founder’s passion and the technical expertise required to develop an innovative, evidence-based product.

The Problem: Inaccessibility of Cold Water Therapy

Cold water therapy offers numerous health benefits, including reducing inflammation, enhancing recovery, and boosting mental resilience. Despite its potential, it remained largely inaccessible to the average person. Traditional ice baths were often cumbersome, expensive, and lacked the technological integration needed to optimize the user experience. The challenge was clear: How could we create a smart ice bath that democratizes cold water therapy, making it user-friendly and evidence-based for everyone?

The Process: From Concept to Prototype

Comprehensive Scientific Research To ensure our product was grounded in solid science, I led the research initiative, analyzing over 250 research papers and training to become a certified cold water practitioner. This extensive study allowed us to understand the physiological and psychological impacts of hydrostatic pressure and cold exposure, establishing a robust scientific foundation for our smart ice bath design.
  2. Designing the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) Leading a dedicated team, we embarked on designing and building our MVP, deeply rooted in user-centric development:
    • User Research and Interviews: Conducted in-depth interviews with approximately 50 amateur cold water enthusiasts, whose insights shaped both the physical ice bath and the accompanying mobile application.
    • Prototyping Layouts: Explored various bath configurations—upright, lie-down, and hybrid models—rigorously testing each to determine the optimal balance of comfort and effectiveness.
    • Hydrostatic Pressure Assessment: Validated that users would receive the full benefits of cold water therapy through scientifically optimized pressure levels.
